Best Tasmanian Spirits

Showcasing the best spirits Tasmania has on offer.

Tasmanian Gin, Tasmanian Vodka, Tasmanian Liqueur.

Best Tasmanian Spirits – Furneaux Distillery are a no-fuss community of passionate farmers, growers and producers.

After visiting Islay in the southern Hebrides off Scotland, famous for its peaty maritime drams, Furneaux Distillery realised that Flinders Island also had, in abundance, the elements to create an island-produced whisky that would speak of its maritime environment.

Furneaux Distillery use 100% Tasmanian malt barley, pure rainwater and a unique local peat which is at once earthy and briny. It is a sustainable and renewable resource which spends a good portion of the year submerged in the salt lakes and lagoons of the wild east coast of Flinders Island. Furneaux Distillery then complete the production of their spirits from start to finish at The Flinders Wharf, from the peat smoking of the barley in a mobile malt kiln to the bottling and distribution.

Tasmania Flinders Island a sense of place

Tasmanian distilled spirits – and in particular single malt whisky – are now considered world class. In a few short years the industry has developed an enviable reputation for producing whiskies that reflect the environment in which they are produced – a kind of whisky “terroir”.

Hobart Whisky started developing their distillery in 2014 and started producing in 2015. Despite being one of the first dozen Tasmanian distilleries, they flew under the radar for quite a while, and in this time concentrated on making whisky.

Not all expressions are the same, and it’s important to Hobart Whisky that everyone can drink them as they do. Hobart Whisky hand bottle and label each release in their distillery with each bottle having its own identifying bottle number.

Hobart Whisky bears testimony to their Tasmanian malted barley, fermented with style, gently distilled with grace, then sweetly rested in hand selected oak casks.

Each small batch holds its own distinctive characteristics and signature.

Spring Bay Distillery’s approach to making single malt whisky ensures every part of the process has the highest quality application that can be achieved. The use of premium Tasmanian barley, the quality of the wash, the distilling, the careful selection of casks and importantly using arguably the best water in the world – East Coast Tasmanian rainwater.

Spring Bay on Tasmania’s pristine east coast is situated on latitude minus 42.5 degrees south. Spring Bay’s cool temperate coastal environment produces some of Australia’s finest seafood and cool climate wines.

The influence of Spring Bay’s terroir comes through the water used in the distillery, which is less than 500 metres from the sea. Most afternoons, sea mist drifts up the valley and falls on the roof of the distillery, later collected when the rain falls. This sea salt imparts a unique profile to the water which is both soft and sweet.
