About Shene Distillery

It all began in 1819

Shene Estate was once the ostentatious residence of early colonialist Gamaliel Butler. The grand sandstone gothic revival stable includes a coach house, tack room and stablehand quarters and is one of Australia’s earliest pastoral holdings. A short walk away you’ll find the early 19th-century sandstone Georgian farmhouse which forms part of the magnificent country estate.

The heritage-listed property has direct links with King George III and Governor Lachlan Macquarie and has been conserved for future generations.

In the early days, the estate was an endless 22,000 acres, home to grazed sheep and cattle and wheat cultivation. The gothic revival stable and Shene’s collection of convict-built structures were constructed in 1851.

The Discovery

The discovery of an early Australian pagan hexafoil symbol found alongside the sandstone window sill in the gothic buildings alludes to witchcraft and superstition. The rough mark scratched into the sandstone is a sign used centuries ago to ward off evil spirits. However, ritual markings are not rare in early colonial houses. It’s the first time this symbol has been found in Australia.

Life on the farm changed forever!

The run down hayshed at Shene Estate was rebuilt to accommodate the distillery. From a historical context, the distillery’s design and construction needed to sit in harmony with the adjacent gothic revival stables and Shene’s collection of convict-built structures.

An Alliance of Whisky and Heritage

Damien Mackey founded the Mackey brand at his home in Newtown before merging with David Kernke at Shene Distillery. David’s love for heritage conservation and whisky making steered the evolution of Shene Estate into Shene Distillery.
